Angela Lansbury has died in her sleep on Tuesday, five days before her 97th birthday.

She is best known for playing the role of Jessica Fletcher in the US crime drama Murder, She Wrote. Her theatre credits include Mame, Gypsy, Hamlet, The King and I, and Sweeney Todd. Lansbury also notably voiced Mrs Potts in the 1991 Disney film Beauty and the Beast.

Her last film appearances were for the Christmas season in 2018, where she starred in The Grinch, Mary Poppins Returns, and Buttons: A Christmas Tale. She will also appear in the upcoming film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which will be her final film appearance.

Lansbury received five Tony Awards, six Golden Globes, and an Olivier Award as well as an Honorary Oscar and a Lifetime Achievement Award from BAFTA over the course of her career. In 2014, she was made a dame by Queen Elizabeth II.
